In The Garden

June 29th, 2010

No, really, I’m not referring to that abominable song, I’m referring to in the actual garden, where we grow food… In the garden there are six things I hate, nay, even seven that are detestable to me:

1: Haughty slugs.
2: Lying gophers.
3: Mice that do strawberries no good.
4: Snakes that devise wicked schemes.
5: Weeds that are quick to rush into existence.
6: False pumpkin seeds that do not rise… err, grow.
7: Chickens that stir up dissension among one other.

I pray that they may be put far from me… ;-)

Say not the Struggle Naught Availeth

June 26th, 2010

Say not the struggle naught availeth,
The labour and the wounds are vain,
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been they remain.

If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars;
It may be, in yon smoke conceal’d,
Your comrades chase e’en now the fliers,
And, but for you, possess the field.

For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain,
Far back, through creeks and inlets making,
Comes silent, flooding in, the main.

And not by eastern windows only,
When daylight comes, comes in the light;
In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly!
But westward, look, the land is bright!

Carry On

June 24th, 2010

God’s grace is relentless and untiring… it will never stop pursuing His loved ones all the days of their life. We may forget it in the daily moments of life, in the wearying and monotonous moments of living, but He is working His most powerful grace in our lives during these oft disregarded and unnoticed tiles that create the mosaic of our lives. The weight of these moments will break our backs if we try to shoulder them on our own strength — they can’t be shouldered by any but the shoulders that carried the cross for us.

So look back even over this week and see His omnipotent and all-sovereign hand in every step that you took. He was there walking with you with feet that once walked long, dusty miles on this earth. And He was present even in every plan of yours that went awry; and every heated and impatient word that you spoke, and every fatiguing trial that you endured. He endured every conceivable trial, and was patient with even the most infuriating of people. He was there with you even then, working to draw you closer to Him through it all, and conform you more to His likeness… admit your need for His daily grace, even on the sunniest of days, but especially on the days that bruise and batter our hearts and hands and feet, when all the aggravating moments of the day build up to explode with the force of a powerful storm. His love and grace will not let you go until you are sanctified and changed from a child of darkness, who is a self-worshipping lump of clay, to a true child of His kingdom, fit to serve Him forever in glory on the new heavens and earth.

Strengthen the Hands Which Hang Down

June 19th, 2010

The Race of Faith

1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The Discipline of God

3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. 4 You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. 5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:

“ My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
6 For whom the LORD loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”[a]

7 If[b] you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Renew Your Spiritual Vitality

12 Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.
14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.
The Glorious Company

18 For you have not come to the mountain that[c] may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and darkness[d] and tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so that those who heard it begged that the word should not be spoken to them anymore. 20 (For they could not endure what was commanded: “And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned[e] or shot with an arrow.”[f] 21 And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”[g])
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, 23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
Hear the Heavenly Voice

25 See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, 26 whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, “Yet once more I shake[h] not only the earth, but also heaven.”[i] 27 Now this, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.
28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may[j] serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 29 For our God is a consuming fire.

Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.

Every Common Bush

May 14th, 2010

And truly, I reiterate, . . nothing’s small!
No lily-muffled hum of a summer-bee,
But finds some coupling with the spinning stars;
No pebble at your foot, but proves a sphere;
No chaffinch, but implies the cherubim:
And,–glancing on my own thin, veined wrist,–
In such a little tremour of the blood
The whole strong clamour of a vehement soul
Doth utter itself distinct. Earth’s crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God:
But only he who sees, takes off his shoes,
The rest sit round it, and pluck blackberries,
And daub their natural faces unaware
More and more, from the first similitud

Wagons Ho!

April 12th, 2010

Tomorrow, I embark upon another trip. 16 hours driving over 2 days. One car. With 8 other people. I’ve had enough experience with family car trips by now to know what the next couple days of driving will be like. I’ll read. Eat. Drift in and out of sleep. Talk. Read some more. Quilt. Journal the scenery. Journal the whacky things my little brothers are saying. Listen to music on my iPhone. Browse hunger-inducing websites like TasteSpotting on my iPhone. Hand out snacks. Break out singing a couple stanzas of “Found a Peanut” or “Johnny Rebeck’s Machine” to get all my siblings joining in, then stick my headphones back in while they continue singing stanzas of this song ad infinitum. :-P Battle with our corgi Homer over his invading *my* personal space while sitting between me and my sister. Haul out my camera to take pictures of the fleeting scenery. Repeat all the of the above over the course of all 2 days. And lastly… wish I was there already. ;-)

Bright Colors and Flavors

April 7th, 2010

Easter this year was colorful, bright, and spicy. Yep, spicy. As in the food that we ate was quite savory and flavorful — Shredded lamb with garlic, rosemary, and tzatziki sauce, deviled eggs, steamed asparagus with lemon and butter, homemade pita bread, lentil salad, hummus, dill cheese, and crackers. Oh, and I almost forgot the strawberry shortcakes with vanilla ice cream. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of that bountiful spread because I was so hungry and ready to eat it. Forgive me. :-P

Good thing our feast days only occur every few months.
4498618253_0dd1d8228f
Except, today happens to be another feast day. It’s my Dad’s birthday and naturally we are going to eat well on this day — Though, considering that there are about 10 birthdays we celebrate in our family every year, and counting in all the other “feast days” which we take advantage of to eat well, I’m not sure how healthy this is for our waistlines overall! ;-) Grilled steaks, salad, smashed potatoes, and for dessert, a homemade maple cheesecake are on the menu for today… I promise I’ll get pictures.

Fussing

March 28th, 2010

Here’s a convicting quote from George MacDonald; far too often, I also fuss over small, trifling things, and waste my time fretting about unimportant quarrels and worries… I should be able to let these small things go when they are taken from me or lost, not because it is wrong to care for them, but because I know my sovereign God ordains even the smallest things that come to pass, such as, losing a book or picking the checkout line in the grocery store that has the most annoying person in the store in front of me. :-P

This quote is taken from a book of George MacDonald quotes, compiled by C.S. Lewis.

We, too, dull our understandings with trifles, fill the heavenly spaces with phantoms, waste the heavenly time with hurry. When I trouble myself over a trifle, even a trifle confessed — the loss of some little article, say — spurring my memory, and hunting the house, not from immediate need, but from dislike of loss; when a book has been borrowed of me and not returned, and I have forgotten the borrower, and fret over the missing volume… is it not time I lost a few things when I care for them so unreasonably? This losing of things is of the mercy of God: it comes to teach us to let them go. Or have I forgotten a thought that came to me, which seemed of the truth?… I keep trying and trying to call it back, feeling a poor man till that thought be recovered — to be far more lost, perhaps, in a notebook, into which I shall never look again to find it! I forgot that it is the live things God cares about.
