Bones in Your Closet

How does one deal with old ghosts?

Stuff them in chinks in the wall to keep the cold winter away?

Pour kerosene on a pile of them, then toss on a match?

Set them up in chairs around the house, and give them books to read, like they were just part of the furnishings?

Pretend that they aren’t there, glaring at you with bloodshot eyes, breathing heavily on your neck?

Flaunt them by introducing them to people, patting them on the back, and calling them, “old friends”?

Offer them a cold beer, and commiserate over old memories together?

You wish you could escape them, but you can’t. No matter where you go you’ll always be collecting new ghosts, that will turn into vintage ghosts quickly enough.

It’s not hopeless, even if you’ll never be able to brush all the last, wispy ghost shreds off your clothes. Remember, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” Happy New Year, and don’t fear old ghosts, or the new ones to come — our Lord is sovereign over all.

The Feast of the Snow

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

“There is heard a hymn when the panes are dim,
And never before or again,
When the nights are strong with a darkness long,
And the dark is alive with rain.

Never we know but in sleet and snow
The place where the great fires are,
That the midst of earth is a raging mirth,
And the heart of the earth a star.

And at night we win to the ancient inn,
Where the Child in the frost is furled,
We follow the feet where all souls meet,
At the inn at the end of the world.

The gods lie dead where the leaves lie red,
For the flame of the sun is flown;
The gods lie cold where the leaves or gold,
And a Child comes forth alone.”

– G.K. Chesterton

Small Joys

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

It’s the little things in life that make every day significant, such as:

Getting caught in a hailstorm while running.

Reading some of the shocking words that little boys compose while playing Scrabble.

Listening to William sing “I’m Dreaming of A White Christmas.”

Getting to ooh and aah over the intensity of country stars on a clear, freezing night.

Counting the limos as we drive by them in our big, green 15 passenger van. 6 limos in one neighborhood. Extravagant!

Finding a “me-sized,” solidly built, wood desk at the thrift store for a bargain price. Now I have a new landing place for all my miscellaneous junk.

Getting chocolate in the mail as a thank you from my work.

Cuddling with a warm rice bag as the temperatures drop.

Making my all-time favorite Christmas goodie — coconut bon-bons. If I made them, I don’t have to share, right?

Each of these small joys is a gold piece that is being collected and hoarded in the treasure chest of memory in our family — don’t pass over the smaller blessings found in daily life in exchange for a momentary, immediate pleasure.

Celebrate the Child

Christmas, where are you? Right around the corner apparently… Christmas snuck up awfully silently this year. :)

What is Christmas? Christmas is music boxes and the piano going non-stop; it’s whisking in and out of the kitchen to lend a helping hand, or steal something when the cook isn’t watching; and it’s dancing and running for the joy that infuses the air and grows slowly sweeter and stronger day by day. Though Christmas joy never seems to reach its zenith on Christmas Day itself… I love Christmas morning, the stockings most of all, and the preparation for the feast, eating the feast, and then at night, dimming the lights to look at our rustic, charming Christmas tree robbed of its presents. Christmas has always been a slowly increasing bliss that doesn’t just burst on Christmas morning, but fades away. It’s best that way. Christmas is meant to be enjoyed like a glass of red wine, slowly sipped throughout December.

Some of us have to resort to Charlie Brownesque trees to bring a little bit of the Christmas cheer to certain parts of the house!

And what else is Christmas? Christmas is a celebration, and the preparation for a feast as we recall with fast-beating hearts and joyful countenances the coming of our Messiah. “Hope of all the saints Thou art; Dear desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart.” Christmas is less about syrupy sentiments over a cute little baby in a warm manger, than it is about a King who came incarnate, was humiliated and killed by mankind, descended into Hell, rose again from the dead, ascended into Heaven, and sits now reigning at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. This is the essence of Christmas… and it should make us filled with more than just a warm feeling; we have the theology of victory — the world can keep its theology of death. Christ ransomed more than just our hearts, He ransomed our lives, families, and nations from the depths of depravity and darkness.

So let us celebrate the child. And raise our glasses high. Let’s not be ashamed to feast at the appropriate times or forget that our Lord conquered death and darkness.

Indistinguishable

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

The Christian mind has lo, these many years been pretty well switched off as far as ordinary life is concerned. It has taken what was available without asking any questions. Of course, in religion and morals it tried to do its own cooking; but across the rest of life—schooling, housing, marrying; working, playing, spending—it has been content to buy whatever packaged mixes were available on the shelves of the secular idea market. The result is that Christians, who would like to think they were different, have only succeeded in making themselves indistinguishable. They who would like to hope they had the answers, have only the same questions as the rest of the world. And so they sit on the sidelines, capable of an occasional pious comment…

— Robert Farrar Capon, best known for his book The Supper of the Lamb.

Ocean Snow?

We were at the ocean, really! The snow was just along the way. We couldn’t resist getting out and throwing a few snowballs at each other.
