Bike Riding

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

One of the highlights of my trip (aside from actually going, spending time with Mom and Ben, dipping my toes in the cold water and eating tasty food) was coasting a bike along the bike paths in Monterey and around Pacific Point. I easily outstripped Mom ;) and kept pace with Ben, though, I let him stay in the front, so he could lead the way. It was so delightful, I know what I’m doing next time in Monterey.

The bikes that we rented were called “coasters” and they were interesting to look at with white wall tires and wide handlebars. They truly did coast.

Meandering Monterey

Hold my hand while we walk through Monterey.

First we go through Cannery Row.

Finally, my mind was starting to go bonkers looking at that twisted, abnormal art on the first floor. Charles Russell is more relaxing.

Strolling along. Oh look, another historic house! Pose, Ben.

I’ve got to get my picture, too. This house belonged to William Tecumseh Sherman, yikes!

Flowers, la-di-da.

More flowers! This must be a garden, or something.

Bluebird of Happiness. But would we really be happy if we had him?

Alright, you can let go of my hand now.

Monterey Montage

7:30 p.m. Sitting in a darkened room, the whizz of the fan overhead keeps my subconscious mind occupied; the rest of my mind takes in the leftover elements: two fellow occupants, their breathing lowered as they slip into a semi-daze while sight wanders over words on a screen or book pages, beige, red, pink and grey assembled into the typical hotel room palette, worn tiles that march across the cramped bathroom floor, here a chip, there a chip, all these details rally together in this little hotel room, bravely facing each new customer.

Well, after being “wined” (actually, it was sparkling water) and dined, I feel sufficiently recovered after an adventurous and provocative day to hold your hand while I lead you through some of the evidence of my trip. All of the following were taken yesterday. Tomorrow I will show you today. Follow my lead.

No, we didn’t just spring up out of the ocean, god and godess that we are (not), we are land creatures by birth.

Ben just had to test his love factor. Poor deluded child. The light indicates he is only “clammy”.

What?! This thing must not be working right. Mild, huh, at least that’s better than clammy *sticks out tongue*.

It definitely isn’t working right… ;)

Adventure in the Life of Anna

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

10:30 a.m. I am blissfully riding along bumpy California highways, watching the valley land of Sacramento melt away from my view. Soon, the tawny slopes and bumps of San Jose will also give way to a sweeping coastline dotted with smooth, singing sands and punctuated by craggy, inflexible rocks, made so by the perpetual hammering of waves.

It would be gratifying just to walk, or run along these strands, attacking the water momentarily before it drove me back again, all the day long, but, when other conscious souls are with you, you feel compelled do something more with them than what now appears to be foolishness.

Speaking of souls, did I forget to mention that my Mom and brother Ben are with me? Oh yes, someone is driving the car, I couldn’t find anyway to magically transport myself to the oceanside on such short notice, so I appointed Mom chauffeur and Ben bodyguard over my royal person and, well, here we are, merrily pursuing a mini adventure.

One more thing to mention. I am only able to write this post in the car with the use a *new* computer, a present from Ben, and I am very glad to have it at my use. It has traded hands a few times, but now it is mine, for a while. :) Thanks Ben. I’m eternally grateful. ;)

Note I’d like suggestions for names for this computer, I’m terriblyuncreative when it comes to things like that, do I see any hands raised?End of Note

I leave you with my live blogging photos.

La-di-da

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

Mom and I just got back from enjoying a leisurely afternoon shopping. We did encounter a nasty surprise when we opened up a cooler that we had taken with us for frozen groceries, but love covers a multitude of sins, so everything was alright.

Here we are before we headed out:

It was a good time listening to music, eating lunch at Panera bread and shopping around. I’m looking forward to enjoying a dinner prepared by Bekah.

Birthday Cheer

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

I don’t want to make a big to-do about it, since I am not prone to drawing attention to myself *modest blush*, but today is my 18th birthday, and I just wanted to say thanks to a few people.

Mom comes first. When she was a young thing of 28 I gave her the most trouble of all the babies so far. For some reason, I was awfully determined to come out at many, many months too early, and I laid her up for several weeks while she got me to calm down and wait for my real time. She has always worked so hard for our good, and when she is old we will rise up and call her blessed. Especial thanks, Mom, for also working so intently on a beautiful photo album for me. I will treasure it for many years.

dscn2758.jpg

Rebekah is next. Thanks so much for being a really wonderful sister, your love and patience with me are astounding, and I’m sorry for all the times that I haven’t loved you or been patient back. You are my best friend and I know that you are going to remain so for the rest of my life. Please don’t move too far away from me! Thanks for all your sweetness. Oh, and you can really plan a surprise well!

dscn2406.jpg

Of course, if I left out Dad then I wouldn’t be here. ;) Thanks Dad for being such a patient teacher, not only with me, but with all of us. I love it when you explain things because we always learn more than we asked. Failure is never an option with you. :)

dscn2390.jpg

Here’s to all four of my little brothers, they encourage, frustrate and incense with with their antics (such as tying each other up with rope, like they are doing now with much noise). But they also make me smile and love them, esepcially when they wish me very enthusiastic “happy birthdays!”. You little boys are something special, you better not grow up and give me grief! ;)

*Not included in this picture is William.*

Grandpa and Grandma, you have been very motivating and loving and rally around all I do, and every time we get to be together I wish that you lived closer by. Many of my gifts and abilities come from you guys. I know that you delight in each one of us and always look forward to hearing what we have been doing.

p6170264.jpg

Something would be amiss if I didn’t mention someone who has been my second mother, friend and mentor for all 18 years of my life. You are very near and dear to my heart, and you have taught me many things that I will never ever forget. Thank you for your love and mentoring.

img_0632.jpg

To the rest of you, Pieter, Ben, Sarah and Hans, I’m sorry I didn’t include your pictures in this post, but that doesn’t mean that I forgot you! God put you in my life for some reason, and not just to teach me patience or the true meaning of brotherly or sisterly love! ;) I cherish being with each and every one of you and we have a special bond that isn’t going to be easily broken, especially if we keep God at the heart of that relationship.

Hunger and Thirst

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

How important is the reading of God’s word to you? Do you wake in the morning and hunger and thirst after it as you do for literal food? Does the joy and beauty of a deeper understanding found in a reading hold captive your heart and make you want to share it with the closest soul? Do you feel required to inscribe it on your heart and teach it daily to your children?

How can your walk with God be refreshed when you leave off reading the Bible for unpredictable periods of time? Is the Bible only to be picked up when the spirit takes you? Does your judgment come from your own sense of comprehension, or do you find God’s word all sufficient for every area of life?

Does a deep yearning for more of the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ compel you to read the bible? Or is that yearning dead, lost in often repeated words now, that you fail to fathom anymore?

Are you saturating yourself in His word and crying out “give me more Father”?

You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Mysterious Bites

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

In the summertime, as a little girl, I remember playing wildly and hard in the relentless sun with my older brothers and sisters. Donning our ragged camouflage, we would paint our faces black and green before plunging into the jungle surrounding our property, engaged in vicious guerrilla warfare with one another. I would scramble down slopes and throw myself into the bushes, hiding as the other kids passed by, then reappearing, zoom! I was on the run again. There weren’t too many casualties, as a rule, because it was hard to get a clear line of sight on the enemy, especially when it was sneaky brothers. It was easier, however, with whimpering little sisters. ;)

Those days, long ago and far away, are now gone. I am more snake-wise, or wise to snakes, these days and tick-wise as well. Moreover, I learned to identify leaves of three, and left them be, but, for the most part, they seemed to be harrassing me! Heaven knows I tried my best to stay many feet away from them.

The redness and puffiness was the worst part; I would steel my mind not to scratch my poor legs, or arms. The awfulness was heightened, though, when it was my face, and I would make sure a couple of hours before church to hold an ice-soaked washcloth to my “battlescars” in a vague hope that it would make them disappear, and then maybe people wouldn’t ask so many questions. They did anyway.

Why am I telling you all this? To lessen the irritation my leg is suffering right now. The itchiness of several insect bites brought to remembrance those similar “agonies”. Again, I plug my ears against those tiny, pleading voices that are crying out from my leg, and resolutley apply more washclothes.

I know for a fact that it isn’t poison oak, for, unless I have been sleepwalking, my feet have not trod the ground where it is to be found. Besides which, these are definitely bites adorning my fair skin. Wracking my brain, I am trying determine where these came from. Brown recluse? Nah. Black widow? Eh. Ant bites? Hmmm. I do recall walking in close proximity to a few ant hills. Nonetheless, today all my sheets are in the laundry, and I am intent on vacuuming every square inch of my room. No chances taken. No harm done.

Oh, and while this spider is scary looking, he really is a friendly fellow, and I know that it was not he who bit me, because he had made his abode on the outside of our window.
