Jamestown Island

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

I cannot for the life of me remember if these pictures were taken the third day or the fourth at Jamestown Island; it is beginning to blur together in my mind. That’s bad. But at least I have pictures! Enjoy.

The Jamestown Island church. It was built later in the 17th century.

This monument was made for the 1907 tricentennial celebration of Jamestown. We learned that 3 million people came from around the country for that anniversary. 8O

Gary DeMar led the tour we were on of Jamestown Island. Here he is standing on the location of the fort that the Jamestown settlers built in 19 short days.

Crosses over a mass grave site that was only recently uncovered; which is true of much of Jamestown. We could see the excavations as we walked around.

The ruins of the tower of the original church that was built in the 1600s. The rest of the church was added on at a later date.

Cheese!

That is all for now.

Second Day-James River

Monday, June 25th, 2007

More photos from our boat tour of the James River. It was delightful to be on the actual river, and I’m sure it was a great thrill for all the little kids on board.

Surprise, we met a lady whose acquaintance we had made at the History of the World Conference in Virginia last year! It was special to meet her whole family this time. :-)

Ooops. One more. :-D

Now I don’t have any more.

First Day(s)-First Landing

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

Since I’m rather on the hot seat I will post some more pictures from our trip. I didn’t get half as many as I would have liked, only a few hundred, but there are enough to pick and choose from for a few posts.

momaa.jpg
The “first day” was spent flying from one end of the country to the other; thankfully, we had relaxed flying times and the flights were tolerably smooth.

The official first day of the celebration. On the banks of the James River where the first landing of men from the Susan Constant one of the three ships which came to Virginia in 1607.

Men of the first landing. It was a SUPERB reenactment. :)

Was this the first time the cross was planted on Virginian soil? Hmm… I wonder.

The spot where the first landing was reenacted. *Note* It was not the actual spot; the actual landing happened at Cape Henry a few miles away.

One in Four Thousand

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

I have almost been home a week from a recent trip that I took to the good, olde colony of Jamestowne. Well, Jamestown alone was too small to hold me, I did do some bopping around in the company of Mom and friends; from Jamestown to Williamsburg, from Williamsburg to spending the last three days at Fort Pocahontas whose use was graciously and generously supplied by Mr. Harrison Tyler, direct grandson of “His Accidency”, John Tyler, 10th president of the United States.

I met so many people and families that I cannot even put names to some of them. It was difficult, (7 a.m.-11p.m. most days) but it was wondrous. The amalgamation of speakers blessed some 4000 souls with their feast of words, and their tours lead us over hill and dale, where George Washington and his men won the battle that gave us the victory in the American Revolution, or to the quiet and venerated spot where Lady Rebecca, a.k.a Pocahontas, a.k.a Matoaka, was baptised.

Many memories and much history. Those who attended actively added to that history in commemorating the 400th anniversary of the establishment of Jamestown. I tried to capture a small amount of it with my little camera, but of course, almost all of it could not have been expressed through snapshots: The celebratory feeling that would sweep through 3000 people after a rousing “huzzah!”, or the awe of standing in the footsteps of men and women who, used by the hand of God, shaped and carved a raw wilderness into a nation like none other in the history of the world. We are resting on laurels that were never awarded to those men and women, who died in the first years by disease, fatigue, and massacre, yet few people call that to memory, even as this, the 400th anniversary of an establishment that opened the gates for millions more to come into our nation, passed by, barely noticed by the media except in derision.

Many men and women, prompted by God, would not let this anniversary slip by, though, and a birthday party for our nation is what Vision Forum has been planning for the past couple of years and carried out with surpassing success. America wants to celebrate death, we rejoice in life, America wants to give confusion and chaos the helm, we place it ever and always back in one hand, the hand of our almighty pilot, America wants to display her sin, always more gaudily clothed, we point to a redemptive Christ, shining in white robes.

My eloquence is ended. But, I can direct you to many other fellow writers who will be jotting down their own perspective of this past celebration. C.S. Hayden was there as a live blogger and fellow celebrator with his whole family and he has posted links to as many blogs who are writing about Jamestown as he could find. He saved me a little time hunting them down. :)

So please, please, take a look at those blogs and read their posts.

Blessings,
Grace

To the Death

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

To the Death, Chocolate Chocolate-chip Cookies; recommended for your brother and his fellow firefighters. Don’t faint. This recipe is easily cut in half.

4 1/2cups flour
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 pound butter, softened
2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups packed brown sugar
2 large eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons vanilla
1 cup unsweetened cocoa
4 cups chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a bowl stir together flour, salt, and baking soda. In another large bowl stir together butter, both sugars, eggs, vanilla and cocoa. Gradually stir flour mixture into butter mixture and mix until combined. Stir in chocolate chips and stir to distribute evenly.
For cookies: Drop dough by tablespoonfuls onto greased baking sheets and bake about 10 minutes. Cool on a baking rack.

A Look at Jamestowne

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Here is a *rather large* taste of what is to come from a recent trip.

fl.jpg
First landing in Jamestowne.

cloud.jpg
Cumulonimbus cloud. It did thunder, by the way. Quite violently.

lady.jpg
Lady Rebecca.

flower.jpg
A look inside a poppy; was her dress cut from this fabric, perhaps?

mom1.jpg
Lady Carmon. Okay, that was corny. My Mom, I think is a more suitable title. ;)

More from the “photojournalist” later.

Dawning of the Day

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Golly, it is good to be home. I am a %100 certified homebody. There was this strange aching within me, when I was in the humid jungles of Virginia, to see grubby, little, familiar faces, and to hear their continuous voices ringing in my ear. There was even a vague feeling of wanting to see my older brothers. ;)

All in all; it was a wonderful, blessed, glorious, happy, providential, sobering, thought-inducing trip. Praise God I was able to take it, even though it was bittersweet, knowing that an experience such as this will never take place again in my lifetime. A similar one may occur for my children’s children, but not for me.

I will be posting more in upcoming days, but only after I have cooked many meals, and run the vacuum cleaner over lots of square miles of carpet, I missed that!

Nine firefighters die in blaze in South Carolina.

Pray for their families; I cannot even imagine the horror and dread they must be experiencing.

Sleep(less)

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

Oh, California! Where the night stars punctuate the heavens with alacrity, above an aromatic earth, and where rolling hills, which ascend eternally higher into the sky barriers above, wear a coverlet of warmest breezes this summer morning.

Oberon! Sandman! I received no help from you, else I would have slept! Like Phineus, each time I reached out my mind for sleep, a harpy would descend from from hiding and snatch it away!

Well, all right, I will stop bewailing my lack of sleep. Let me just say I slept the predestined amount of time.

Life is going to be from a different aspect this next week for a couple of reasons. 1. I am taking wings and flying to Jamestown with my mother (I just need to remind myself not to fly too close to the sun), and 2. The perspective that you and I will have of Jamestown will mainly be through a camera. (See here.)

Well, the clock has struck 5 a.m.! My desired time to awaken… I pray the Lord my soul to keep, my time to bless, my mind to guard, my health conserve.

May He bless you and keep you all.
