Extra, extra, read all about it!

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

Dear Readers,
All of you who think that Gracie isn’t posting because she is sick, are mistaken. Gracie is quite healthy now. So I am trying to pressure her to write again, and I need your help. So, if you want her to keep writing then leave a comment.

P.S. If you want me to keep writing, you can also leave a comment. :-)

Sincerely,

Life is so Confusing

Monday, April 24th, 2006

You’re doing fine, visiting, laughing, cooking, cleaning, reading, thinking. Then bam! It hits you. Your head develops a throb, your neck stiffens, your throat feels huge.

Colds.

Making Ready for War

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

I finish off my piece of toast and with a sigh set down my still steaming coffee mug. I pick it back up and take a sip again.

Outside all is grey, though a few days previous it had been as brilliant as a balmy afternoon in June in the Sierras. Jubilant was the word to describe it. But it melted quickly away with the gathering raindrops.

Now, I must ready myself for the dawning of the day and put on the armor of an 1850’s woman. Corset, chemise, corded petticoat, lace petticoat, dress, and, oh, I mustn’t forget to put on my stockings and shoes before I don my corset.

Spiritually too, I must put on the armor of God.Every day brings new battles, and I cannot expect today to be an exception.

Weeding

Wednesday, April 19th, 2006

Honestly, what does one do when one has free time? When left to one’s own devices things can grow boring. Structure and discipline is what I need! Except, when I have it I don’t want it.

I was looking like a “Panama slave,” while weeding in the garden, or I was according to Jo. I am currently working on weeding a big plot of ground behind our house. I just quit working on it because I am afraid of too much sun, so I have about another day’s work and then I’ll be finished with that.

Sunny Days

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

I think that I soaked up my fair amount of sunshine today, both reading on the deck and weeding a flower bed. Nasty worms.

Take my quiz.

Reading for Today

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

My bible reading for today:

1Paul called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,

2Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both their’s and our’s:

3Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

4I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;

5That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;

6Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:

7So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

8Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

10Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

11For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.

12Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

13Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

14I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;

15Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.

16And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.

17For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

18For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

19For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

20Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

21For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

22For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

23But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

24But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

25Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

26For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

27But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

28And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

29That no flesh should glory in his presence.

30But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

31That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

I have also appreciated being able to read Charles Spurgeon’s devotional book Morning and Evening. Though I cannot say that I have read it faithfully every day, when I have picked it up it has been a blessing to read.

You can read the morning devotional for today here.

Dreams are such entirely weird things. Mine last night involved people and places I haven’t seen or been to in a long time. However, while Joseph was able to interpret his dreams, I think that I had better not try with mine, it just wouldn’t make sense.

Easter Days

Saturday, April 15th, 2006

Though I enjoy the process of getting dressed up in my period clothing, I don’t really like doing those mundane household tasks in my corset, petticoats and period dress with my voluminous skirts. To top it off, my dress is a dressier design, with pagoda sleeves and white undersleeves. I don’t want to risk getting it spotted or ripped. Needless to say, I looked rather ridiculous with both my sleeves rolled up and a green apron on over my dress washing breakfast dishes. I also take about ten minutes to get undressed, and then I have enough clothing to start an entire laundry load.

Tomorrow is Easter Sunday. I cannot believe that it has been a year since last Easter, but it has. Where has the time gone? I am a little afraid that I am becoming more conscientious of how quickly the time goes. Every Sunday it doesn’t seem that it was actually a week ago since I was at church. The weeks keep on passing me by, but there is no way for me to stop the time. I just have to make the best of the hours that I have.

I was unable to sing very well last Thursday night. I had already been talking for a few hours in Coloma to a few hundred school children. I was demonstrating, *ahem*, I was talking while my friend Kally was demonstrating ropemaking for the various groups of children that gathered around us. I am happy to say that it wasn’t too hard doing it, and that I shall do it more in future days.

Well, Happy Easter everyone!! Let us praise the Risen Lord!

Freezers and Taxes

Wednesday, April 12th, 2006

My freezer is beautiful looking. So clean. So pristine. So ice free. So empty. In fact, I like it empty. Some people may not, but I don’t think they appreciate the pretty picture that a junk free fridge or freezer makes. No messy spots, no icky looking bags or containers. Just well placed condiment jars and vegetables. The string cheese is in one place in the drawer.

I think another thing that my readers ought to appreciate is this post from Bryce. When governments take hard-earned money away from orphans and widows God calls it something—evil.

Java

Coffee doesn’t have an equal. Not tea, not hot chocolate.

I am always the one to make coffee in the morning before everyone is up. I touch the switch on the burr grinder, fill up the pot with twelve cups cold tap water, clean out the gold filter and fill it up with twelve neat scoops. Ten minutes later, coffee! Good coffee too.

As a rule I only drink one cup a day. Sometimes, I make an exception and do two, but I try to limit it to one.

A Lull in My Life

Tuesday, April 11th, 2006

Life is seeking to irritate me, but I won’t let it.

Sourdough pancakes. Pasta. Potstickers. Oatmeal bread.

Instead of that I get: Eggs. Salad. Porkrinds. Flaxseed Bread. Yum, I love healthy eating.

Eating a steak isn’t really that awful though. I love chicken Caesar salad for dinner. I do want a potsticker something awful, though.

I finished Queen Margot by Alexander Dumas. I don’t think it had a very satisfactory ending and could have gone on further. After La Mole died, the plot seemed to have ended. I don’t consider La Mole the hero of the book, though. He started out prominently enough but faded into the background as the story progressed. Instead, Henri De Navarre, who started out as an unfavorable character, won my support to the Huguenot cause about halfway into the story. Even Charles IX of France is likeable as a weak man who is bullied by everyone, foremost by his mother, Catherine De Medici.

Catherine De Medici was creepy as the conniving, poisoning queen mother. Her head needed to be examined by one of those doctors who were always healing people after duels in the streets of Paris.

I feel like I’m on hold in life right now. Waiting, waiting. Pretty soon life is going to be busy again, but there’s a waiting period before the curtain rises. It might be boring, but not if I’m filling in time reading The Odyssey, an epic that reminds me a bit of Beowulf.
