Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

Today’s lesson:

Take out your Cantus Christi Hymnal and turn to page 344.

There yet? Good, good… now, please note in the right hand upper corner that the words are from the 7th century. Now, in the left hand upper corner note that the music was written by one, Timothy D. Dusenbury in 1999.

When I opened the hymnal the other day during piano lessons to pick a new hymn, I thought that this one sounded familiar, so I had my teacher play it for me.

The music for this hymn is thrilling. It sounds akin to a Thomas Tallis hymn, with deep resounding notes and comforting chords.

Here is the first verse to Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation:

Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ is Head and

cornerstone; Chosen of the Lord and precious, Binding all the church

in one; Holy Zion’s Help forever, And her Confidence alone.

Your assignment for today: either play or sing your way through this hymn a few times. It will be worth the effort.

Still Praying

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

Candace’s fight isn’t over yet.

Please continue to keep her in your prayers. One should never underestimate the power of prayer, and prayer would be such a comfort to the Walsh family right now.

Spunky has some interesting thoughts on Algebra.

It’s a good thing that Noah understood what God was talking about when he gave him the directions for building the ark, or else we might not be here. ;)

Snow

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

Silent snow slowly putters down, melting as it touches the ground surface, but it prepares the way for other snowflakes to pile up and eventually become a white playground for children who cannot contain themselves inside any longer.

Snow! Is it the exciting-beyond-measure-once-a-year-event for our family an event that causes us to raise a deafening hububb throughout the house with shouts of, “come look!”? Or is it a sticky substance that plagues some who have to face it for days on end, and who wake up some mornings to a thermometer that reads far below zero?

Would I too, become deathly sick of the everlasting sight of snow sliding down, covering my hopes of sun in a wet blanket that takes oh so long to melt?

On the other hand, for us mild weathered Californians, snow is a white bright hope, a hope that covers everything with it’s splendid sheen; as far as the eye can see everything is as white as snow.

Even for growups who are forced to wake up in the wee hours of the morning this snow can be a fascinating event. Those who did not go out to enjoy toboggan rides down steep ravines, stayed comfortably inside, wrapped against the chill in the warm arms of heat radiating from the woodstove full of oak wood. Their assigned task while the children are pleasently occupied outside (except for those who could not brave the freezing temperature for a long period of time) is to fix hot chocolate for the returning conquerors, and explorers, back from tracking across snowy regions.

“Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail…” Job 38:22

Games?

Monday, February 20th, 2006

What dummy invented games?

Children don’t like to sit down to a regulated, proper game with “rules.” This is probably due to the rebellious nature that is inherent in all of mankind. Is this why they are happier with a box or a sunny day outside than they are playing Sorry or By Jove?

Is it just my own siblings or is most normal children who can’t seem to play a game in an orderly fashion or at all? Maybe we just can’t understand in our well ordered mind why a child would prefer sticks over a game board. Maybe it is better for them to have to scope out new horizons, and stretch their imaginations rather than play the same old game over and over.

This leads me to the conlusion that children are better off with their imaginations at play.

Perfect Places

Friday, February 17th, 2006

In heaven will all our thoughts always be filled with God?

It’s hard to imagine a perfect place, though sometimes our imaginations can overwhelm us thinking about it.

Entrepreneur

Tuesday, February 14th, 2006

Webster’s Dictionary defines an entrepreneur as “one who organizes and directs a business undertaking, assuming the risk for the sake of the profit; also the originator or manager of public entertainments, or of a musical enterprise.”

I suppose that I should consider opening up a nightclub as a business then. ;)

An entrepreneur is one who wants to be in charge of his own business, and under his own direction. He is willing to take risks in order to further his business. He understands how business works and knows that it takes time and trial to “succeed.”

Five qualities I think are necessary in a successful entrepreneur and why:

1. He understands that no matter what he does, or what he earns, God is in control of everything. Any success or failure is from His hands.

2. He follows first the wisdom and advice found in Scripture and only second, the advice of man. What Scripture says can apply more to our lives than anything man can say, no matter how practical man’s advice may seem.

3. He is hard working and diligent, sticking to his undertaking even when he feels like giving up. No one wants to buy from or work with a man who promises and then doesn’t deliver. He must always be willing to work hard to accomplish much.

4. He always thinks the best of others, whether it be his employees or the people to whom he is selling. People will be eager to buy from someone who puts their interests before his own. This is a characteristic to be valued.

5. He undertakes hard tasks but doesn’t purposefully take on more than he can handle. Doing hard things can push us beyond what we think is possible, but at the same time we need to act with wisdom in how much we allow ourselves to do.

I spent a whacky night last night with my younger sister and girlfriend; talking with an Italian accent is not easy, especially if you are giggling.
